Base rates have a purpose to see where carriers' pricing begins. However, base rates also lead to problems, distrust and frustration on the client's part. First impressions are everything. Do you really want to start off the relationship as the guy or gal that quoted one price, got in the door and had to explain higher underwritten rates? You can explain to the client till you are blue in the face that it is not your fault... it's the insurance companies fault or it's one of the employee's health conditions... whatever. Still.. at the end of the day you sold one thing and delivered another.

NOW... with all that being said. There is a time for base rates. Sometimes you need to screen potential clients fast ... verify they are interested or move on. If you cannot get them to fill out an online app chances are they are not serious. However, if they will not and you still think you have a shot at their business... base rates may yet be the way to go. By all means continue to use base rates when necessary. But, always request a completed employer app.

In the event you do not do business with a prospect this year... the more you know about the prospect the better your odds of capturing their business at a later date. The data is king. Get their data. Get them to fill out the online applications.
